Program Outline:
Share personal stories about people who have had lung cancer and smoking related illnesses such as emphysema.
Teach students simple visualization techniques to help them realize their potential.
Muscle tests for allergies to tobacco.
Share the results of a simple experiment that captured the tar from 5 filter tip cigarettes and five cigarettes without a filter
Illustrate aversion therapy and how it works using a can of cigarette butts
Explain why nagging won’t work to motivate a smoker to quit
Demonstrate a simple emphysema breathing technique to simulate how it would feel to have this disease
Discuss why people start smoking in the first place – includes a discussion about why their parents/grandparents may have started and why teens start smoking today
Distribute hand-outs for smokers who are ready to quit as well as pamphlets for students who want to help a smoker quit and some books for smokers who are not yet ready to quit
The program concludes with a seven minute home video of an interview with Emma P. – a woman dying of smoking related
lung cancer
This is a very interactive program with lots of action and activity to keep the students focused and interested throughout the entire presentation. |
